Day 14 - Pray for the Sake of Knowing God Better
And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. Hebrews 11:6
What is the basis of prayer? It is that one must first believe that God exists. If one does not believe in the existence of God, why pray? People without faith may pray on occasion. People will sometimes offer a “foxhole prayer” in time of dire emergency, just in case someone “upstairs” might be listening. But consistent, regular prayer only comes about when we believe that God exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
What does it mean that God rewards those who seek him? It means that God has ways of making his presence, blessing, and pleasure known to us. God has ways of bringing heaven down to earth. He has ways of opening the windows of heaven and pouring us out a blessing (Malachi 3:10). Perhaps when you were growing up, you had a relative who always gave unexpected and surprising presents on your birthday. Every child needs a relative like that! God always surprises with his blessings, and he is able to delight the human heart and spirit. It is well worth drawing near to God because his blessing is more precious than riches, earthly glory, or success.
One of the goals of prayer is to seek after God in order to know God better. In prayer we draw near to God. We seek his favor, help, guidance, wisdom, encouragement, and presence. To pray with faith is to pray and believe God is listening. We seek after God because he can be found. The more consistently we seek to know, love, and serve God, the more he makes his presence known to us.
How do we pray with faith? One way is to be consistent in prayer. If you are a parent, pray with your child every night. Even when on vacation, be sure to say your prayers together. Be consistent. Make prayer a regular and consistent part of your life. God’s Spirit gives people gifts and graces and does so more generously when we show ourselves faithful.
Remember today that your prayers are not in vain. Seek after God, and he will make himself known to you.
